Diamond can only be cut by a diamond and the usual tools are a diamond wire, diamond saw and a diamond wheel. Diamonds used to be cut entirely by hand but are now cut initially by hand and then the minor facets are finished by laser precise machines.

It is very rare now for a diamond to be given an "ideal" cut as the required measurements are now a little more flexible to achieve a diamond with perfect symmetry and brilliance. Diamond are now more often graded as "excellent" and for the highest standard should be certified by either GIA or AGS laboratories. An "excellent" cut diamond will have 100% refraction of light entering the diamond returning back out of the top of the diamond and with a predominantly vertical direction of light. The diamond will also have a very even distribution of light with the diamonds facets being all the same proportion and angle.

Certification is now more important than ever. Now that diamonds can be cut to absolute perfect proportions and is not something that can be easily judged by a customer, a good diamond must have a good international certificate. A diamond of the same colour and clarity can vary by up to 60% in price due the quality of the cut. Poor quality diamond still exist and they have very low scintilation so buying a quality diamond is important. It is also important to buy a diamond with a reliable certificate. GIA, HRD and AGS are all very high quality certificate where you can be assured of the quality. EGL and IGI work on a different grading scale and a far more unreliable and will always come in at a much lower price for the diamond.
